Introducing Our Newest Product and Healthcare Hygienic
Fabric

Does DreamCatcher Weighted Blankets have water or fluid proof fabrics available for medical
facilities, hospitals or individuals to purchase ?
OF COURSE !
We are very excited about the newest
addition to our DreamCatcher product line. Starting mid 2011, we will offer a special
waterproof fabric if requested. What is so exciting is, this fabric, is not
only waterproof but it is also breathable, which has
always been a major concern for us. It has been a product in the making for
three years . We never had a problem
making a waterproof blanket in the past, but one that was also breathable, was a
challenge.
After several design attempts we
now have both a hygienic, breathable waterproof fabric coupled with
a great new design, available to both our healthcare customers and
individuals who find that this type of weighted blanket suits their needs
. The new design is called our DreamCatcher Weighted Smoothie which is
available in any fabric. The attraction of this new design made with our also
new healthcare fabric is that it can be wiped down and disinfected easily
between washings, but can also be laundered in the washing machine and dryer,
which can not be said for most other waterproof type fabrics.
*VERY IMPORTANT*
Not all water or fluid proof fabrics are
breathable, in fact , most are not.
Safety at DreamCatcher Weighted Blankets
is our number one concern. We have been very cautious in the past about offering
a waterproof fabric to our customers because so many of them are
made with materials that can pose a suffocation risk.
While many water or fluid proof fabrics
are available many are not suitable for a product used to cover someone. Please be aware of the many health hazards associated with
most water or fluid proof fabric when used as a bedding product. We do caution
that the use of a non-breathable water or
fluid proof fabric should be strictly supervised
when used as a bedding product.
What to avoid?
Non- breathable water or fluid proof fabrics are
fabrics that have been laminated ,coated or backed with a material such as rubber, polycinyl chloride, polyurethane, etc. and may
pose a suffocation danger. They may also not be PBA free. These types of
fabrics include vinyl, rubber backed polyesters, plastic coated fabrics etc.
While these typed of fabrics may be
cleaned by wiping, they CAN NOT be machined washed or dried as the
material may melt.
Water repellant fabrics receive factory
applied treatments which are often fluoropolymer based. These treatment tend to
wear off over time with repeated washings.
DreamCatcher Weighted Blankets is a
major supplier to medical facilities
throughout the country and abroad and currently we do not have any clients using
a non-breathable water or fluid proof fabric because of the related
potential hazards they present to their patients.
All of these concerns are now in the
past at DreamCatchers because we have designed the perfect product to fill the
need for a waterproof product that is also breathable and safe for our
customers.

Babies Love DreamCatcher tm Weighted Blankets
Can I Use A Weighted Blanket on My Baby or Toddler?
01.17.2011– We recently had the following question come in via email and
believe it is a subject our readers would be interested in. The email
follows:
Hello DreamCatcher's....We have been researching the use of a weighted
blanket with our baby to help calm her and to help her sleep. There are many
articles that recommend swaddling and a handful who also recommend the use
of a weighted blanket. There are a few weighted blanket companies that state
a weighted blanket shouldn't be used with children under three. We thought
since your company has been the industry leader for so many years we would
ask your opinion. Thanks for your help, Anne... Minnesota
Do you recommend not using a weighted blanket for a child under three years
old ? And if so why?
We can not speak for other companies products and can only speak on the
quality of a DreamCatcher Weighted Blanket.
There are some weighted blanket manufacturer's who do state their products
are not suitable for children under three years old. Those manufacturer's
know their own products best and have their reasons for not recommending
their own products to younger children.
At DreamCatcher Weighted Blankets we have many children under 3 years old
using a weighted blanket, our youngest clients to date are 3 months old.
Babies, toddlers and their parents really love our 1.5 LB lap pads, lap
blankets and crib/toddler blankets.
All issues must be taken into consideration when determining the best weight
and size blanket for each individual, including younger children. You
certainly would not use a 3 or 5 pound blanket on a baby, they need a
lighter item. Most occupational therapist recommend 10% body weight plus a
pound as a starting point for a weighted blanket. The child's height ,
sensory needs and size of blanket should then be considered to determine the
final weight.
The under 3 age rule references the guidelines set by the CSPC relating to
items that could present as a choking hazard for young children. The
DreamCatcher tm Weighted Blanket design is unique in construction compared
to other brands,in addition to being made with great care to ensure that no
weighting material can escape from inside the blanket due to poor
workmanship.
As always get the advice of your medical professional if available. The
DreamCatcher staff is also well qualified to answer any questions you may
have on the use of weighted blankets for both adults and children of any
age.

DreamCatcher Weighted Blankets are proving helpful to those
undergoing Cancer or Chemotherapy Treatments.
Anxiety is a normal reaction to
cancer. One may experience anxiety while
undergoing a cancer screening test, waiting for test results, receiving a
diagnosis of cancer, undergoing cancer treatment, or anticipating a
recurrence of cancer. Anxiety associated with cancer may increase feelings
of pain, interfere with one's ability to sleep, cause nausea and vomiting,
and interfere with the patient's (and his or her family's)
quality of life.
Customers of DreamCatcher Weighted Blankets
who have experienced cancer related anxiety have reported that using a weighted
blanket has given them relief from those feelings of anxiety and insomnia caused
by cancer treatments. This group of clients use a DreamCatcher as a
sleep aid and a calming tool, both during treatments and at any time
they experience anxiety or insomnia symptoms.

Behavioral Support Specialist
to Present Autism Workshop in La Verne
02/08/2010 The Sun San Bernadino

Behavioral support specialist Boyd Bradshaw will speak on "Bringing Sensory
Integration and Behavioral Support into the Home" and the benefits to children
with autism this month at a free autism parenting workshop sponsored by the
School for Autism at the LeRoy Haynes Center in La Verne.
The two-hour
autism training and informational workshop is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Feb. 25,
for parents and teachers of children who have or may have autism. The workshop
is part of a second annual series designed to provide information to parents
who typically face numerous challenges with their children who have autism or
related disorders.
Bradshaw, who received a bachelor's degree in developmental psychology from
Cal State San Bernardino, operates HCDD, Inc., in the city of Orange,
providing specialized residential services to handicapped children and adults
- individuals he said with areas of greatest need. In fact, only about 400
children in the state are eligible for his programs.
Bradshaw said that parents and teachers typically assume children with
autism exhibiting behavioral issues have environmental stimulus issues, but an
additional cause may be an internal dysfunction.
"In other words, individuals with disabilities can by hypersensitive or
hyposensitive - their neurological system may not respond in a normal manner
to the environment," Bradshaw said. "That is where sensory integration
techniques can be applied. It may be as easy as throwing a weighted blanket on
the bed of a child having sleeping problems (to provide a feeling of security)."
As another example, he said a child exhibiting temper tantrums in public
can benefit from "deep pressure" or "firm massage" before making the
transition into the community.
"This helps them literally reorient themselves to their own body so they
have less anxiety," Bradshaw said, adding there are four key areas to consider
- sensory issues, escape issues, attention issues and tangible issues.
"All behavior stems from one of those four areas," he said.
While there is no charge for the event, reservations are required due to
space limitations in the Family Resource Center at LeRoy Haynes Center. For
reservations, contact the LeRoy Haynes Center at (909) 593-2581.
The LeRoy Haynes Center provides specialized treatment and educational
services to children with special needs relating to emotional development,
autism, Asperger's Disorder, learning disabilities, neglect and abandonment.

What Is The Correct Weight & Size Weighted
Blanket For You?

Considering
Individual Needs Is Important For Weighted Blanket Users
Copyrighted DreamCatcher Weighted Blanket
[August 9, 2009] A weighted blanket is an important affordable investment in
health care, for both the person using the blanket and those who care for
them. It is very important to consider some major points when purchasing a
weighted blanket so that it will work properly for the user and give the
desired results.
Major points to Consider in A Weighted Blanket
1. Goal to accomplish: Is the weighted blanket to be used as a calming tool
, for a natural sleep aid or both?
2. What Is The Correct Size Weighted Blanket?
3. What Is The Correct Weight That I Need?
4. What Is The Best Fabric to Fit My Sensory Needs?
5. What Is The Safest, Most Effective, Most Comfortable and Practical
Weighting Materials?
6. What Is the Best Blanket Construction, Durability & Weight Distribution?
7. How Much Does The Blanket Cost, Is It The Best For My Money?
GOAL TO ACCOMPLISH
In deciding what weighted blanket to purchase the first thing to determine
is what goal you want to accomplish with your weighted blanket.
If you need a blanket to be used as a calming tool in the car, watching TV,
at school, in church, etc. The appropriate size would be a Lap blanket (34"
x 43")or a Wrap blanket (43" x 52").
If you need a blanket for better sleep, the size you choose will depend on
the height of the person using the blanket and /or the bed size.
It is recommended that a weighted sleep blanket be made to fit on the top of
the mattress and not hang over the sides of the bed, for smaller children.
Most teens and adults find that a full or queen size blanket is the most
comfortable size for both sleep and as a calming tool. Also, in most cases,
a sleep blanket should always have the weights evenly distributed throughout
the entire area of the blanket and NOT concentrated in one area.
We have found that there is one exception to that, many of Dreamcatcher
clients with Restless Leg Syndrome seem to prefer the weights to be heavier
in the lower part of their blankets. We have an adjusted formula that is
used for those clients with RLS.
WHAT IS THE CORRECT SIZE FOR A WEIGHTED BLANKET.
A child under 40" in height can use a Wrap blanket (43" x 52) or a
Crib/Toddler Blanket (36" x 52") for sleep.
Once a height of 40" in height is reached, a Twin size
(43" x 75) should be considered to give the young user plenty of growing
room. An adjustment to weight may be required based on the user's height.
Full or double size (54" x 75"), Queen Size (60" x 80"), are both popular
choices for teens, young adults and older adults. King ( 76 x 80) and Queen(
60"x80") size blankets have also been a favorite with couples. Extended
lengths in sleep blankets are available. Weight on these blankets is
determined using a combination of the standard weight formula below, the
users height and the size of blanket.
WHAT IS THE CORRECT WEIGHT
Weighted blankets should never be used as a restraint, it is important that
the user can always remove a weighted blanket on their own, if desired.
At DreamCatcher Weighted Blankets, we have personally researched and talked
with many health professionals to determine the correct weight used in our
weighted blankets. Along with our actual experience in producing the
blankets the past several years, we can see how our weight formulas have
benefited our customers. Many weighted blanket manufacturers today have
followed our lead and have adopted the DreamCatcher weight guidelines.
We found, and most OT's or Occupational Therapists agree, using the formula
to determine the starting weight for a blanket to be 10% of the user's body
weight and add one pound. For example a 100 pound person would start with an
11 pound blanket. This is the starting weight and many personal variables
also factor in to that equation, in which the user would need a weighted
blanket heavier or lighter.
Additional things to consider to determine the final weight includes, size
of blanket and proprioceptive input needs of the user. DreamCatcher staff is
highly experienced in answering any questions as to individualizing and
fitting the right weight and size to the person using the blanket. We also
suggest speaking with your Occupational Therapist if available.
Please visit the DreamCatcher Weighted Blanket website at
www.weightedblanket.net for much more information on choosing the correct
weighted blanket for your needs. The website also includes a wealth of
information regarding how weighted blankets work and who benefits from using
them.
DreamCatcher's holds a drawing each month for a FREE custom weighted
blanket. Details on entering are also at their website.
